I want a better poker database!

And I'm doing something about it.

This weekend i didn't play too much poker. Just a little bit of $2/$4 6-Max and a few tournaments on Sunday evening. I was going to play in the $500K on Party, but I opted out of that to work on another poker-related project. First, the tournament review from Sunday evening.

1) $10+1 satellite to $1M Gtd. on Party -- got 3100 chips in at the 20/40 level with AKo vs. QQ and lost.

2) $20+2 Multi on Stars -- lost about 1/2 my chips when I reraised a guy with AKo preflop at the 10/20 level, got a ton of callers, bet the flop when I whiffed, and got check-raised all-in. I have no idea why I decided to take try to take a 5-way re-raised pot down on the flop with just A-K-high. That might have been a mistake. But then again, it works fairly often too.

3) $15+1 WSOP double shootout on Stars -- got 2nd at the first table. Got all my chips in for a huge pot on the turn with my opponent on an 8-outer and he hit.

4) $20+2 PL Omaha multi on Stars -- lost about 3/4 of my stack when I got limp-raised while holding KsQsQcJh (to an obvious AA). I looked at it afterward, and I'm much more of a dog than I thought I was against a ragged AA in that spot. There was a bunch of dead money between me and the re-raiser and I thought I was a little better than a 3:2 dog when it's actually closer to about 2:1. Then I lost the other 1/4 of my chips when I got limp-reraised while holding QcQsJc9c by the same guy (again, an obvious AA). This time he flopped quads. I made a poor decision in the first AA hand because I didn't correctly remember how much of a dog I'd be in that spot.

Now, a little bit of info about this other project I'm working on. To summarize, my brother and I are going to be making the same thing as thepokerdb but with a few key differences.

1) Multiple sites -- thepokerdb has been saying for a while that they are going to put other sites up. I'm sick of waiting, and I (and many other people) play on a wide variety of sites and could really use this information. Also, a person could "link" stats together. For instance, I might want to look up all the stats on jacksup@PartyPoker and jacksup@Pokerstars and present them together because I know they are the same player (Matt Matros). We'll probably be starting with Party, Stars, Full Tilt and Paradise, then adding sites as time and interest allow.

2) All data available -- thepokerdb only presents the times when a person cashed in a tournament. While useful, it is much more useful to know about the times that they don't cash in addition to this. For example, if I look up a certain player on thepokerdb and find that they don't have any cashes, is this because they haven't played many (or any) tournaments or is it because they suck and they never cash in the many tournaments they play? I want to know these sorts of things.

3) No cost -- I think thepokerdb actually has the data from point #2, and there is a paid version of the site you can use to access this data, plus some other stats they'll compile for you. I hate paying for stuff like this, and I'm sure everyone else does too.

To be clear, I pretty much like everything else about the pokerdb. But the things I listed above are too problematic for me to live with. Plus, it's kind of a fun project that allows me to combine two of my passions -- poker and computer science. For now this is basically an academic project, to see how hard it is and how interesting people find it. More to come on this topic...
