Some Tournaments, Some Database Thoughts
I ran a few tournaments tonight. Here's how they went
1) $20+2, $10K Gtd. on Party -- chipping up nicely until I ran KJ into A8 on the 884J8 board for about 1/2 my chips then lost a race with 88 to AJo for the rest. I don't know about the KJ/A8 hand. Is it possible to get away from this hand against a guy who has been moving his chips in all the time? I don't think so, but maybe I'm wrong. I seem to be totally unable to fold in in these types of situations. Maybe I need to work on that.
2) $9+1 Super Qualifier on Party -- these satellites really attract some bad players. Of course, there're the guys at the final table with 1/4 of the chips in play still limping UTG with the 58s and such. I got 6th/60 (3 seats, 6 spots pay) in this thing for something like $10. Yes! I was in pretty average chip position with 7 left, but I managed to lose a lot of chips from the BB with A4 on the AK7AT board against 77. I was able to hang on to get the money, but overall it was a pretty crappy finish.
3) $15+1 WSOP satellite on Stars -- polished off my first table in about 25 minutes. Here's the final hand of HU. This guy apparently thought that he would win this heads up game by betting 4 or 5 times the pot on every hand; he was wrong. I was planning on being a little more patient than this, but it did the trick. Kinda funny to finish a SNG with 300BBs in play...

I got 3rd overall for $72 when I got in with K3 vs. KQ on a K73 board and got rivered by the good ole 7. Funny, when he set me all in on the flop I said "gamble time," thinking he was on a spade draw. Afterwards he says "good gamble." Thanks jerk. Guess what? The jerk store called... well, you know the rest.
I also played a little $3/$6 6-Max while playing the tournaments and lost a little. On my 2nd hand at the table, I ran AA into AQ on a 4QQQ5 board. This fellow coyly (is this even a word) check-called the turn as to not give away his hand. I have news for you -- I'm going to cap you if you let me with AA on that board. By check-calling the turn and check-raising the river, this fellow gives away his hand and probably costs himself 3-5 big bets. How come I can never be up against a big hand when I have quads? Actually, that's not true. I had quads twice in tourneys tonight and got action both times. Let's look at those.

Aaaaaaaaah. Nice slow play, sir. It's weird -- I typically bet the turn in that spot to prevent a free 4-flush from coming, but somehow I was absolutely certain that I was up against a flush. Good for me, re-drawing for free and what not.

Also, today we (my brother and I) did a lot of work on the new poker database. Conceptually it's quite simple, but there's a pretty decent amount of work that has to go into this little project. By all rights, having autohotkey negotaite with PartyPoker's horrendous software alone should net me a Turing Award. Hopefully we will have something running in a week or two. We already have a little test version of the site and it's pretty nifty. Looking forward to getting it up and running and showing it to the world.
One thing I'm still thinking about is this -- is there some way to "batch" requests to PokerStars for tournament histories or do I have to write an Autohotkey script to go through that stupid menu in their main lobby? Maybe I'll email them and see when can be done about this. Other than that, data collection is up and running on FullTilt, and we have a semi-functional collector for Party (there is some issue with connection timeouts that we need to deal with). Other than that, the data pipeline (get a bunch of raw data files, remove duplicate files, parse the data and format it as a bunch of SQL queries, insert into database) is set up and the web interface is working but shoddy. I'll be honest -- this thing is looking pretty good!
Alright, I need to stop rambling and go to bed. Good night.
